Importation of medicinal products bought abroad into Poland is governed by Polish law. According to it, one is allowed to import into our country up to five the smallest packs of a medicinal product at one time. This regulation applies both in the case of the personal transit and other possible forms of the medicine’s delivery to its recipient (e.g. purchase in a foreign internet pharmacy with the usage of a courier service). That does not apply to medicinal products containing any controlled substances.
Export of medicinal products abroad for so-called personal use shall be governed by the laws of the states on which territory these products would have to be transported. The decision (either to permit such import or not and to which scale) is made by these countries on their own.
Retail trade in medicinal products is conducted by generally accessible pharmacies and pharmacy outlets.
Medicines depending on the category of the availability given to them can be purchased on the basis of a prescription or without it (OTC). Sale and use of medicines which do not meet established quality requirements and those whose expiration date has past are prohibited.
In addition, the trade in OTC medicines in a limited range is conducted by non-pharmacy retail outlets which are herb medicines stores, special stores with medical supplies and generally accessible stores.
It is good to know: to bring a medicine for personal use from abroad, the approval of the President of the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products, Medical Devices and Biocidal Products (URPL – Urząd Rejestracji Produktów Leczniczych, Wyrobów Medycznych i Produktów Biobójczych) is not required – on condition that the number of carried medicinal products does not exceed 5 the smallest packs.
