Qualifications and training

The nurse acquires professional qualifications upon completion of a nursing school.

A nursing school is any higher education institution that offers nursing training at the level of:

  1. first-degree studies;
  2. second-degree studies.

Training in the nursing school:

  1. lasts at least 3 years and covers at least 4600 hours of professional training, of which clinical training accounts for at least 1/2 and theoretical training for at least 1/3 of the entire training duration;
  2. may last less than 3 years in the case of nurses who hold a certificate of secondary education and who completed a medical secondary school, post-secondary school or vocational school training in the profession of a nurse, provided that upon completion thereof the nurse acquires the knowledge, qualifications and skills, conforming to the knowledge, qualifications and skills acquired upon completion of the studies.

The educational standards in the field of nursing are specified in the provisions enacted upon Article 9b, Paragraph 1 of the Act of 27 July 2005 – Law on Higher Education.

The midwife acquires professional qualifications upon completion of a midwifery school.

A midwifery school is any higher education institution that offers midwifery training at:

  1. first-degree studies;
  2. second-degree studies.

Training in the midwifery school:

  1. lasts at least 3 years and covers at least 4600 hours of professional training, of which clinical training accounts for at least 1/2 and theoretical training for at least 1/3 of the entire training duration;
  2. lasts at least 18 months and comprises these aspects of the midwifery training programme that have not been covered as part of the equivalent training in a nursing school, in the case of persons holding one of the documents confirming professional qualifications, listed in annex 5.2.2 to Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and Council of 7 September 2005 on Recognising Professional Qualifications (Official Journal of the European Union L 255 of 30.09.2005, p. 22, as amended);
  3. may last less than 3 years in the case of midwives who hold a certificate of secondary education and who completed a medical secondary school, post-secondary school or vocational school, training in the profession of a midwife, provided that upon completion thereof the midwife acquires the knowledge, qualifications and skills, conforming to the knowledge, qualifications and skills acquired upon completion of the studies referred to in Paragraph 2, Point 1.
